Getting ashore
Ships dock at one of three terminals: HafenCity , Altona or Steinwerder. HafenCity is a short walk from the centre. Altona and Steinwerder need a water bus, shuttle or taxi. Check your ship’s notice for the exact terminal.
Watch-outs
Confirm which terminal you are at. The walk from HafenCity is flat but can be long if you explore the warehouses. Water buses do not run every day. Taxi queues form when several ships are in. Bring a jacket; the waterfront is open.
Getting into Hamburg
From HafenCity you can walk to the Speicherstadt and the city centre in 15–20 minutes. From Altona take the HADAG water bus #62 to Landungsbrücken for about €1.30. A ship shuttle or taxi also runs. The main station is reachable by S-Bahn or taxi.
Taxis & ride apps
Taxis wait at each terminal. A ride from Altona or Steinwerder into the centre is about €13–20. Uber operates. Agree the fare or check the app. Name your cruise terminal for the return. Water buses are cheaper for Altona.
What to do nearby
From HafenCity walk the Speicherstadt warehouses and the Elbphilharmonie. The harbour front is open. From Landungsbrücken you can take a harbour tour boat. These keep you close to the water.
Going further
The city centre, Rathaus and shops are a short S-Bahn or taxi ride. St Pauli and the Reeperbahn are nearby. A day ticket covers buses, trains and some water buses. Arrange return transport early.
Food & shopping
Cafés and restaurants are plentiful near the terminals and in the centre. The fish market is worth a look if the timing works. Cards and euros work everywhere.
Opening times & connectivity
Shops open about 10 am and close by 8. Many stay open later in the centre. Free Wi-Fi at the terminals and cafés. German is the language; English is widely spoken. Emergency number is 112.
Accessibility & mobility
HafenCity is the most walkable. Other terminals need a water bus or taxi. Some piers have steps. Ask the ship about the gangway and any shuttle. Name your exact terminal for the return.
