## Getting ashore

River cruise ships dock at several landing points in the city, so confirm your ship's berth before you set off. Salzhofufer, next to St Johannis Church, is the most central, within walking distance of Neustadt and Altstadt. The port code is DEBBG. Ships use either the original 4 km Brandenburg City Canal through downtown, which is limited to river vessels, or the Silo Canal, which commercial traffic uses through the eastern and northern areas. There is no scheduled passenger service on the river, although seasonal sightseeing boats run to their own timetables. Listed river calls include VIVA Ruby on 14 October, arriving at 18:00 and leaving at 05:00 on 15 October, and again on 16 October, arriving at 19:00 and leaving on 17 October at 11:00. A call on 31 October arrives at 19:00 and leaves on 1 November at 11:00. The dates have no year, so check them with your river cruise operator.

## For walkers and architecture fans

The Dom St Peter and Paul stands on Cathedral Island, the historic core of the city. Estimates of its start date range from 1165 to the 14th century. Its Wagner organ, installed in 1725, is among Germany's oldest original Baroque organs. St Catherine's is the city's largest church, the Old Town Hall is a brick Gothic building with the Roland statue, and four watchtowers still stand on the medieval city wall. The Brandenburger Theater and the Symphoniker perform at the Cultur Congress Centrum in Grabenstrasse. Museum hours change by season. The Archaeological Museum in St Paul's Monastery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, for €5 (€3.50 reduced). The Industrial Museum costs €6 (€3 reduced) and is open 10:00 to 17:00 from March to October. The Frey-Haus and the Steintorturm each cost €3 and open Tuesday to Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00.

## For eaters and drinkers

Budget options include CurryWust at An der Bundesstraße 1, where a currywurst is €1.80, Pizzeria Ventuno at Harlungerstraße 2, and Brückencafé at Hauptstraße 80, open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Mid-range choices include Bräuhaus Kneipe Pur at Lewaldstraße 23A, which brews its own beer and opens Thursday to Saturday from 17:00, and Restaurant Remise at Burghof 2, which serves regional food. For a more formal meal, try Restaurant an der Dominsel at Neustädtische Fischerstraße 14 or Inspektorenhaus at Altstädtischer Markt 9. These details may be out of date, so check opening hours and menus before you go.

## Getting around and money

Walking is the best option from a central berth. Trams and buses serve the square, the railway station and the outer districts but are rarely needed for a basic visit, though tram line 6 runs from the main station to Neustädtischer Markt. Taxis help with limited mobility, but they may be harder to find at a small river landing, so book ahead. Trains from Brandenburg Hauptbahnhof reach Berlin in about 45 minutes and Potsdam in about 20 minutes. As of May 2025 a single ticket is €2.50 and a 24-hour ticket €5.30. Berlin is too far for a practical day trip during most short calls. The currency is the euro (EUR). Carry some euros for small purchases, as cards are widely accepted at larger businesses. Admission prices are in euros too, but check them on arrival. Church hours can be limited, so check before going inside. The main shopping centre is the Sankt-Annen-Galerie.

## Walking guide: berth to Cathedral Island

Start at the Salzhofufer berth. The Jahrtausendbrücke and Neustädtischer Markt are each typically 5 to 15 minutes' walk away. Continue from there to Cathedral Island, which is about 30 minutes each way on foot from a central berth. Allow 2 to 3 hours on the island. Stop in at the tourist information at Neustädtischer Markt 3, open Monday to Friday 09:30 to 19:30, Saturday 10:00 to 15:30, and Sunday and holidays 10:00 to 15:00, though hours vary by season. Cobblestones and many bridges make the longer routes moderately demanding. Head back to the Salzhofufer berth at least 45 to 60 minutes before boarding.

## Accessibility & mobility

CruiseMapper says walking is the best option from a central berth, and that taxis help with limited mobility but may be harder to find at a small river landing. Cobblestones and many bridges make the longer routes moderately demanding.
