Getting ashore

Bingen is a river cruise call, not an ocean port. River ships use one of several landing stages along the Rhine waterfront, and the exact berth can change from call to call, so check your ship’s notice on the day. Most landing stages are beside or near the Kulturufer promenade. From the central landings, the old town is a 5 to 15 minute walk. Ask the ship’s staff which landing stage they have assigned, and confirm it before you leave the ship. Note the walk back so you allow enough time for the return. The schedule lists calls on 1, 6 and 11 October 2026, which have now passed, so check your own cruise’s schedule.

For walkers and architecture fans

The old town has the Basilica of St Martin and the Speisemarkt, where a café stop is worth making. Klopp Castle, the town’s landmark, sits on the hill above the old town. The climb is steeper, so a taxi is a sensible option for those who want to avoid it. Burg Klopp also houses the town administration. The Museum am Strom covers the Rhine and Hildegard of Bingen, and its opening hours need checking before you go. The Hildegard Forum is based on Hildegard von Bingen’s nutritional teachings. Wear suitable shoes for the cobblestones and the hill.

For nature and outdoor fans

Park am Mäuseturm gives views of the Mouse Tower and Ehrenfels Castle. The Mouse Tower stands on an island, so view it from the shore or a boat. Do not cross the exposed riverbed to reach it, even at low water. Rheinstein Castle lies about 9 km north-west of central Bingen. It has furnished rooms, courtyards and Rhine views, but the approach includes steps, so a taxi or an organised trip is the better choice than walking. Local boats run into the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on seasonal schedules, with separate tickets.

For eaters and drinkers

The Speisemarkt café is the easiest stop from the old town, and Burg Klopp has a restaurant on the hill. Zum Weinkeller at Vorstadt 60 and Gaggianer at Badergasse 36 are both listed in town. The Hildegard Forum serves food based on Hildegard von Bingen’s nutritional teachings. Take some cash for small purchases in cafés. The Speisemarkt and Klopp Castle are both on the walking route from the landing. Several options sit near that route, so pick one on the way back to the landing. Check mobile roaming before you dock.

Getting around and money

Bingen Stadt station is near the central waterfront, and Bingen Hauptbahnhof is farther west, near the mouth of the Nahe. Confirm which station you need before you travel, since the right one depends on your landing stage. Look up rail timetables the day before and allow time to reach the station from the landing. A seasonal passenger boat and a year-round vehicle ferry run from Bingen to Rüdesheim, though the departure point may not be near your ship. The car ferry is recommended for its views during the crossing. Allow 3 to 4 hours or more for Rüdesheim, which has a walk through the historic centre, a visit to the narrow Drosselgasse and a ride on the cable car to the Niederwald Monument. Check the cable car’s running times before you cross. The currency is the euro (EUR). Festival dates change, including the June jazz festival, Rhine in Flames in early July and the Binger Winzerfest in late August and early September, so check them before you go.

Walking guide: the Kulturufer and old town

Start at the landing stage on the Kulturufer promenade, which is level. Walk west along the waterfront toward the Nahe and Rhine confluence to the Park am Mäuseturm, for views of the Mouse Tower and Ehrenfels Castle. Turn back and head into the old town, which is 5 to 15 minutes from the central landings, to the Basilica of St Martin and the Speisemarkt. Climb to Klopp Castle if you want the views, but the hill is steep, so a taxi is the easier option. Return by the same route to the landing stage. The self-guided loop from the landing covers about 3 to 4 km and takes 50 to 70 minutes of walking, or 2 to 3 hours with stops. Keep your ship’s all-aboard time in mind.

Accessibility & mobility

The Kulturufer waterfront and the walk west towards the Nahe are the level routes from the landings. The climb to Klopp Castle is steep, the Rheinstein approach has steps, and the wiki advises taking a taxi for Rheinstein Castle and the Rochusberg.
