Getting ashore
Ships anchor off Rangiroa, and passengers tender ashore to Avatoru, the main village on the atoll. Tender times depend on the wind and the swell, so check your ship’s notice.
Watch-outs
The atoll is low and remote. Sun is strong and there is little shade, so carry water and a hat. The passes can have strong currents, so dive and snorkel only with a licensed local operator.
Tiputa pass
The Tiputa pass is the best-known dive site, where reef sharks and rays gather in the current. Boat trips from Avatoru run to the pass, and the timing depends on the tide.
Avatoru village
Avatoru is the main settlement, with a church, small shops and cafés. It is a quiet place to see daily life on the atoll.
Pearl farms
Black pearl farms are a large part of the atoll’s economy. Some farms welcome visitors to see the oysters and the pearl process.
Food & shopping
Fresh fish, coconut and tropical fruit are the local food. Few restaurants serve simple meals, and prices are higher than in the cities.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the CFP franc. Cards are accepted in some places, so carry cash. Mobile data is limited.
Accessibility & mobility
The tender landing and the boats are not easy for anyone with limited mobility. Village paths are sandy in places. Ask your ship and the operator about step access before booking.
