Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Quai d’Honneur in the centre of Papeete. You walk off the pier into the waterfront. The market and visitor centre are a short block away. A drum group often greets arriving ships.

Watch-outs

The waterfront walk is open to the sun. Taxi fares are high; agree the price before you leave. Local buses (le truck) run along the coast but schedules are loose. Bring water and sun cover. Night taxis are scarce.

Getting into Papeete

The market, shops and main streets start right outside the terminal. No shuttle is needed for downtown. Local buses stop across the road. A taxi covers short hops. Walking is the simplest way for the centre.

Taxis & ride apps

Taxis wait at the pier gate. Fares are regulated and start around 1,000 XPF. Agree the price before the car moves. No major ride apps. Name the Papeete cruise terminal for the return. Hourly hire is common for island tours.

What to do nearby

Walk to the Marché de Papeete for fruit, crafts and food stalls. The waterfront and nearby streets have shops. These are all on flat ground. Most passengers stay in town or take a short taxi farther.

Going further

Point Venus is a short taxi ride. Beaches and waterfalls need a longer car or tour. The ferry to Moorea leaves from the nearby terminal and takes about 30 minutes. Arrange return times carefully.

Food & shopping

The market has local food and crafts. Nearby cafés and the supermarket serve basic needs. Cards work in larger places. Cash in Pacific francs is useful for the market and taxis.

Opening times & connectivity

Shops open about 8 or 9 and close by 5 or 6. The market is busiest in the morning. Free Wi-Fi at cafés. French and Tahitian are the languages; English is spoken in tourist spots. Emergency number is 15.

Accessibility & mobility

The pier to the market is flat and short. Longer walks are level but exposed. A taxi is easier for limited mobility. Ask the ship about the gangway. Name the cruise terminal for any return.
