Getting ashore
Ships anchor in Taiohae Bay, and passengers tender ashore to the town. The waterfront is a short walk to the centre.
Watch-outs
The island is remote and mountainous, with few services. Roads are rough and steep. Bring water, cash in CFP francs and sun cover.
Taiohae
Taiohae is the island’s administrative centre, with a cathedral, a market and a waterfront. It is a quiet town for a walk.
Archaeological sites
Nuku Hiva has large stone platforms, tiki carvings and ancient sites from the Marquesan culture. Guided tours are the best way to see them.
Waterfalls and valleys
The Vaipo waterfall and the Taipivai valley are popular tours. The roads are rough, so a 4x4 is needed on some routes.
Food & shopping
Marquesan food includes poisson cru, breadfruit and pork cooked in an earth oven. Markets sell fruit, crafts and tapa cloth.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the CFP franc. Cash is needed, as cards are rarely accepted. Mobile signal is very limited.
Accessibility & mobility
The tender landing is hard for anyone with limited mobility. The town is mostly flat, but the tours involve rough, steep roads. Ask your operator for accessible transport.
