Getting ashore
Ships anchor in the bay at Hanavave, and passengers are tendered ashore. The village is small and walkable from the landing.
Watch-outs
Fatu Hiva is remote, with very few shops, no hotels and little infrastructure. Bring water, sun cover, cash in CFP francs, and anything you need from the ship.
Hanavave
Hanavave is the island’s only village, set in a steep valley beside the bay, with a church and a few houses.
Marquesan culture
The island is known for its tapa cloth, its stone tiki carvings and its archaeological sites, which local guides can show you.
Walks and the coast
Walks go through the valley and along the coast. The paths are steep and the heat is strong, so take a guide.
Food & shopping
Marquesan food includes poisson cru, breadfruit and fresh tropical fruit. Local crafts are sold in the village.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the CFP franc. Cash is needed, as cards are not accepted. Mobile signal is very limited.
Accessibility & mobility
The tender landing is hard for anyone with limited mobility. The village and paths are steep and uneven. Ask your ship and operator about access before booking.
