Getting ashore
Ships anchor off the atoll, and passengers tender ashore to Rotoava, the village on the atoll. The village is small and walkable. Tender times depend on the wind and the pass, so check your ship’s notice.
Watch-outs
The atoll is remote, with few shops and services. Bring what you need from the ship, including water and sun protection. The strong sun reflects off the lagoon, so take extra care. Currents in the passes can be strong, so swim only with a guide.
The lagoon and the passes
Fakarava is known for its two passes, where the tide flows in and out of the lagoon. Drift dives and snorkelling in the passes attract sharks and rays. Go only with a local operator who knows the tides.
Rotoava village
The village has a church, a small market and a few shops and cafés. It is a quiet place to see daily life on the atoll.
Pearl farms
Black pearl farms are part of the atoll’s economy. Some farms take visitors on a short visit to see the oysters and the pearl process.
Food & shopping
Fresh fish, coconut and tropical fruit are the local food. The few restaurants serve simple meals, and prices are higher than in the cities.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the CFP franc. Cards are accepted in some places, so carry cash. Mobile data is limited.
Accessibility & mobility
The tender landing and the boats are not easy for anyone with limited mobility. The village paths are sandy in places. Ask your ship and the operator about step access before booking.
