Getting ashore
Ships berth at the port of Bastia, on the north-east coast of Corsica, close to the old town and the Vieux Port.
Watch-outs
Bastia is a steep town with stairs and narrow lanes. Summer is hot and the sun is strong. Shops close for lunch.
Vieux Port and the Citadelle
The Vieux Port is lined with cafés and the Italianate buildings, and the Citadelle is a fortress on the hill above the harbour, with views over the town.
Old town
The old town has baroque churches, including the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste with its famous Black Madonna nearby, and narrow streets.
Cap Corse
Cap Corse, the northern peninsula, has villages, lighthouses and wine. Coach tours run along the coast road, which is winding.
Food & shopping
Corsican food includes charcuterie, brocciu cheese and chestnut desserts. The local wines and liqueurs are good buys.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are in the town.
Accessibility & mobility
The port is flat, but the old town has steep stairs and cobbles. Coach trips on the Cap Corse roads are long. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
