Getting ashore

CruiseMapper’s wiki says ships anchor off Port Stanley on the island’s east coast. Wikivoyage says large ships anchor offshore, and passengers are ferried ashore by tender near the town centre. The wiki schedule lists Silver Wind on 10 November 2026, arriving 08:00 and departing 14:00. World Traveller and Le Boreal are listed for 18 November, and Viking Polaris for 28 November, with no times. The Jetty Visitor Centre offers information and a shop, with hours that vary by season and on some cruise days, per a 2016 listing. Ask your ship about the tender boat and the step onto it before the call.

For walkers and architecture fans

Stanley is small and sits on a north-facing slope, so walking is the best way to see the sights, according to Wikivoyage and the wiki. Christ Church Cathedral is open daily from 8am to 5pm. Services are at 10am on Sunday, and sometimes at 8am and 7pm. The wiki calls it the world’s southernmost Anglican cathedral, and its whale-jawbone arch dates from 1933. St Mary’s is a wooden church from 1899 at 12 Ross Road, the only Catholic church in the islands, with oil murals on its western wall. Government House, built in 1845, is the governor’s residence, and Ernest Shackleton stayed there during his Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The Falkland Islands Museum covers the 1982 conflict, local history, and flora and fauna, and its phone number is +500 27428.

For nature and outdoor fans

Gypsy Cove is about a 15-minute taxi ride from town and is often the first place visitors see penguins, according to Wikivoyage. The wiki’s weather snapshot taken on 19 October 2026 showed 6.1°C with a fresh breeze of 10 m/s, gusting to 12.9 m/s, so bring layers. The UK’s RRS Sir David Attenborough is homeported in Port Stanley and runs round-trip voyages to Antarctica. RRS Ernest Shackleton and RRS James Clark Ross were homeported here until 2019. The Stanley Marathon is held in March. It is a 42 km race, described as the world’s most southerly road marathon, and entry must be booked in advance.

For shoppers

Stanley is the territory’s main shopping centre, according to the wiki. Most central shops cater to cruise passengers and sell souvenirs. FIC West Store on Dean Street sells groceries, toiletries and phone cards, and is open seven days a week. The sources list no other phone card outlet. The Capstan Gift Shop on Ross Road sells local gifts, and the Philatelic Bureau in the Town Hall sells Falklands stamps. The Seafood Chandlery on Airport Road is a supermarket on the edge of town. The Falkland Islands Company owns a hotel and several shops in town.

For eaters and drinkers

Shorty’s Diner on Davis Street East is one option. The Waterfront Kitchen Café on Ross Road serves lunch around £12 and dinner around £18, per a January 2023 listing, and Wikivoyage’s listings give prices in pounds sterling. The Malvina House Hotel may need reservations, especially at weekends. The wiki counts 4 pubs and 3 restaurants in the town. Wikivoyage’s listings were last updated mostly in 2016, 2020, 2023 and 2024, so prices and hours may have changed, and you should verify them before you go.

Getting around and money

Two taxi companies serve the town and surroundings: Bonners Taxis on +500 51126 and Town Taxis on +500 52900. Taxis are the main way to reach the outer sites. Most international flights land at Mount Pleasant, about 56 km from town. Penguin Travel transfers between Stanley and Mount Pleasant cost £14 one way and need booking 24 hours ahead, per a 2016 listing. Port Stanley Airport is just outside town for domestic flights. The Falkland Islands pound, FKP, is the official currency. The Standard Chartered Bank on Ross Road is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30am to 5pm, and on Wednesday from 9am to 3pm. All local phone numbers use the +500 prefix. The sources give little on Wi-Fi and no ATM details. Stanley Leisure Centre has the only public swimming pool in the islands.

Accessibility & mobility

The sources do not describe accessibility at the anchorage or along the streets. Stanley is small and walkable, and Wikivoyage recommends walking for the sights. Ask your ship about the tender boat and the step onto it before the call. Taxis are listed for trips further out of town.
