Getting ashore
Ships dock at the Sans Souci zone or at the Don Diego quay, just south of the Colonial Zone. From Don Diego you can cross the highway and walk into the old town.
Watch-outs
The highway between the port and the old town is busy and crossing needs care. Taxi fares should be agreed before you set off.
Colonial Zone
The Colonial Zone is the oldest European city in the Americas, a UNESCO site. It has the Cathedral of Santa María, the Alcázar de Colón and Calle Las Damas, the oldest street in the New World.
Malecón and the coast
The Malecón is the long seafront boulevard, with the Faro a Colón lighthouse and the monument to Columbus.
Los Tres Ojos
Los Tres Ojos are three limestone caves with lakes, reached by taxi or tour.
Food & shopping
Dominican food includes la bandera, mangú and fried plantain. Restaurants in the Colonial Zone are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Dominican peso. Cards are accepted in larger places, and ATMs are in the city.
Accessibility & mobility
The Colonial Zone has cobbled streets and steps, and some museums have uneven floors. The Malecón is level. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
