Getting ashore Amber Cove or Taíno Bay: check your ship

Into town Road transfer from Amber Cove

Town visit Historic centre and San Felipe fort

Cable car Replacement works; planned 2028 opening

## Getting ashore: two different ports

Check your ship's terminal name before arranging a pickup. [Amber Cove](https://www.ambercoveport.com/port-information/) is on the Bay of Maimón outside Puerto Plata; [Taíno Bay](https://www.porttainobay.com/en/faqs) is in the city. Both have purpose-built leisure areas, but they are separate destinations. A driver booked for the wrong one cannot simply meet you beside the gangway. Save the correct terminal name and the pickup instructions.

## Getting into Puerto Plata

From Amber Cove, arrange a road transfer to the historic centre rather than planning to walk along the main road. Ask the driver to quote both the outbound and return journey, including waiting time if you want a short city tour. From Taíno Bay, the historic centre is a practical walking outing for passengers comfortable with the heat and uneven pavements. Ask staff for the approved pedestrian exit and a city map. Your time begins at the ship, not at the port gate.

## A manageable city visit

Start around Parque Independencia and the Cathedral of San Felipe Apóstol. Continue to the colourful Paseo de Doña Blanca and Umbrella Street, then allow time for a drink or lunch. The Victorian-style wooden houses and balconies make this a more rewarding stroll than simply shopping at the cruise terminal. Allow roughly two to three hours in the centre with breaks, plus your transfer and the walk through the port. This is a planning allowance, not an organised tour duration.

## History by the water

Fortaleza San Felipe overlooks the Atlantic at La Puntilla. It is a 16th-century coastal fort and an easy historical focus for a first visit. Check admission and opening arrangements before relying on an interior visit; the waterfront also offers an outdoor stop. Choose the fort and town instead of combining several distant attractions on a short call. Keep your return route and terminal name saved on your phone.

## Cable car: do not plan a ride

The Puerto Plata teleférico is undergoing replacement. The Dominican Presidency's [3 October 2026 announcement](https://presidencia.gob.do/noticias/gobierno-inicia-remozamiento-integral-del-teleferico-de-puerto-plata) schedules the new system for the first quarter of 2028, after installation and testing. Older guides recommending the cable car are out of date. If an excursion offers Isabel de Torres, confirm whether it uses a road vehicle and what is actually open; a mountain visit is not the same as a cable-car ride.

## A pool day or a longer excursion

Staying in your own terminal's leisure area is the simplest low-travel option. Taíno Bay lists pools and a lazy river; its pool area is not an ocean beach. Check locally which facilities are complimentary and which require payment. For a proper beach outing, book a return transfer and clarify beach-club access, loungers and food charges. Damajagua waterfalls are a separate active excursion: ask about walking, slippery surfaces, swimming requirements and the route operating that day before paying.

## Taxis, costs and lunch

Amber Cove's operator lists independent taxis but does not publish a fare on its taxi information page. Ask for the current rate and confirm whether the quote is per vehicle or per person, one-way or return, and in pesos or US dollars. Do not budget on a generic cheap city-taxi estimate. In town, look for Dominican dishes such as rice, beans and chicken, or a fresh fruit drink. Carry some Dominican pesos for small purchases and check the price before ordering.

## Returning comfortably

Take water, a hat and sun protection; allow for a rain shower and a seated break. Agree your return pickup before leaving the driver. Leave enough time for road delays, port security and the walk back to the gangway before the ship's all-aboard time. Download the town map and your booking confirmation before going ashore. Use the terminal shown on your ship's papers when asking for the return journey.

## Accessibility & mobility

Confirm gangway arrangements and any port transport with your ship. The town has uneven pavements, kerbs and areas exposed to the sun. Taíno Bay suggests a city outing for wheelchair users, but that does not establish an independently step-free route from your ship. Pre-book a suitable vehicle if walking is difficult and confirm whether you remain in your wheelchair during travel.
