Getting ashore
Catalina is a small island off La Romana on the south-east coast. Ships anchor or berth at the island’s pier, and passengers come ashore by tender or pier.
Watch-outs
The island is managed as a resort, with services limited to what it provides. Sun is strong, and beaches have little shade.
The beach and the reef
The beach has calm, shallow water, and snorkelling on the reef is the main activity. Water sports are available for a fee.
La Romana and Casa de Campo
La Romana is the nearby town, and Casa de Campo is a large resort with golf and beaches, reached by road.
Altos de Chavón
Altos de Chavón is a replica of a Mediterranean village above the river, with an amphitheatre and craft shops. It is a short drive from La Romana.
Food & shopping
Dominican food includes la bandera, fried fish and fresh fruit. The island’s restaurants serve simple meals.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Dominican peso. US dollars are accepted in most places, and cards are accepted in larger hotels.
Accessibility & mobility
The pier and the beach paths are mostly flat, but the sand is soft. Ask the operator about wheelchair access and beach equipment.
