Getting ashore
Copenhagen has three cruise terminals. Most turnaround ships use Oceankaj, which has four terminal buildings and is the busiest pier. It is about 7 km from the city centre. From the airport, the metro is the simplest route. Take the M2 for eight stops to Kongens Nytorv, change to the M4 towards Orientkaj, then board the free cruise bus to Oceankaj. Ships also run a free shuttle to the metro station in the morning.
Watch-outs
Copenhagen is expensive, and prices in the harbour area are high. Metro tickets must be validated, and the cruise bus ticket machines take cards. Cycling is common, so take care at crossings and in bike lanes. Plan the metro and the bus back to the ship with a time margin.
Nyhavn and the harbour
Nyhavn is the colourful 17th-century canal lined with cafés and old ships. The walk from the metro takes about ten minutes. It is the most photographed spot in the city, so go early or late for quieter views.
Old town and palaces
The old town, Strøget, is a pedestrian shopping street. Rosenborg Castle has the crown jewels and a garden. Amalienborg Palace is the royal residence, and the changing of the guard at noon is a popular sight. The Round Tower gives views over the old town.
Tivoli and the parks
Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, open in season. The Botanical Garden and the Kastellet fortress are quieter options.
Day trips
Helsingør and Kronborg Castle, the setting for Hamlet, are about 45 minutes by train. Roskilde Cathedral, the royal burial church, is a short train ride away. Both are well suited to a half-day trip.
Food & shopping
Danish food includes smørrebrød (open sandwiches), pastries and smoked fish. Street food at Torvehallerne market is a good choice for lunch. Shops close early on Sundays.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Danish krone. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and cash is rarely needed. Mobile data is good in the city.
Accessibility & mobility
The terminal and the metro are step-accessible at most stations, and the free cruise bus has a ramp. Nyhavn has cobbles and steps down to the water. Tivoli and the palaces have level paths in most places. Ask your cruise line about accessible transport on the day.
