Getting ashore

Ships dock in the port and passengers take free shuttle buses to the Valparaíso Cruise Terminal at Muelle Prat, which is within walking distance of the town. A visitor centre is on the pier.

Watch-outs

Valparaíso is built on steep hills, and the streets are narrow and uneven. Wear comfortable shoes. Keep valuables close, and use official taxis.

Cerros and funiculars

The city’s hills are linked by historic funiculars. The street art and murals on the Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the main sights, and the views are the reward for the climb.

Viña del Mar

Viña del Mar, the elegant sister city, is a short taxi ride away. Its beaches, gardens and the Castillo Wulff are popular.

Neruda and the coast

La Sebastiana is the Valparaíso house of the poet Pablo Neruda, with views over the bay. Tours and guided walks cover the city’s history.

Food & shopping

Chilean food includes empanadas, seafood and pisco sour. The markets sell fresh fish and local crafts.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the Chilean peso. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are common in the centre.

Accessibility & mobility

The terminal is flat, but the city is steep, and the funiculars involve steps. Some streets are cobbled. Ask your operator for accessible transport and vehicles.
