Getting ashore

Ships berth at Porto Grande, the harbour of Mindelo on São Vicente, close to the town. Check your ship’s notice for the berth. Taxis are available at the quay.

Watch-outs

Mindelo is windy, and the sun is strong. The harbour is a working port, so keep to the marked walkways. Cash in escudos is needed for most purchases, and card payments are limited.

The town

Mindelo is a colourful port town with Portuguese colonial buildings, music and a strong café culture. The Avenida Marginal runs along the harbour, and the old town has churches and markets.

Music and culture

Mindelo is known for morna and coladeira music, the sound of the islands. Bars and clubs in the old town host live music, most often at weekends.

Monte Cara and the coast

Monte Cara is a hill above the town with views over the harbour. The island’s beaches, including Calhau, are reached by taxi, and the roads are rough.

Food & shopping

Cape Verdean food includes cachupa, a stew of corn and beans, and fresh fish. Local cafés are good value. Shops close early on Sundays.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the Cape Verdean escudo. Cash is needed, and card payments are limited. ATMs are in the town centre.

Accessibility & mobility

The harbour and the Avenida Marginal are flat. The old town has uneven streets. Beaches and hill roads are rough, so ask your operator for a vehicle with step access.
