You step off the pier into the duty-free shops. Some ships use the next-door [Redcliffe Quay](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Redcliffe+Quay+Antigua) , a short walk along the waterfront. On busy days a few ships go to Deep Water Harbour, about 1.5 km away. From there you walk or take a taxi. The terminal has shops, restrooms and an information desk. ## Watch-outs Taxi drivers and helpers sometimes approach you before you reach the official stand. Use the St John's Taxi Association kiosk. Agree the fare and whether the driver waits before you leave. Camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians. The town streets are narrow and can be crowded when several ships are in. No beach is within an easy walk. ## Getting into St John's Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay sit in the town centre. The main streets, market and cathedral are a flat 5-15 minute walk. Shops open onto the quays. For beaches or Nelson's Dockyard you need a taxi. Local minibuses leave from the West Bus Station nearby, but they follow local routes with no fixed timetable. ## Taxis & ride apps The official taxi stand is at Heritage Quay. Rates are fixed per car for up to four people. Dickenson Bay or Fort James is about US$12 one way. Nelson's Dockyard is about US$24. US dollars are accepted. Book through the association or agree the price at the kiosk. Shared vans are common for beaches. On the way back, name Heritage Quay. ## What to do nearby Walk from Heritage Quay to Redcliffe Quay for older buildings, cafés and boutiques. The public market is a short walk if it is open. The cathedral sits a few blocks inland. These are all on flat ground. For a beach, take a taxi to Fort James (closest, about 10 minutes) or Dickenson Bay (more facilities). Both have bars and shade options. ## Going further Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour is about 40-50 minutes by taxi. It is a restored 18th-century naval yard and UNESCO site. A half-day taxi tour can cover the dockyard and a beach. Arrange the return time so you are back well before the ship leaves. The rainforest canopy tour is farther and needs a full morning. ## Food & shopping Heritage Quay has duty-free shops for jewellery, liquor and electronics. Redcliffe Quay has smaller boutiques and places to eat. Beach bars at Dickenson Bay or Fort James serve lunch and drinks. Cash in US dollars or EC dollars works almost everywhere. Cards are accepted in larger shops. ## Opening times & connectivity Shops near the port open with the first ships, usually by 8 or 9. Many close by 5 or 6. The public market runs mainly on weekdays. Free Wi-Fi is available at the terminal and some quayside cafés. English is the language. Emergency number is 911. ## Accessibility & mobility The quays and main streets are mostly flat. Some sidewalks are narrow. A beach day needs a taxi that can take a wheelchair. Ask the ship about the gangway. Name Heritage Quay for the return.
