## The town

Ybbs is a quiet Danube town with a historic centre, a parish church and a view across the river. The town walls and the old streets are pleasant for an hour's walk.

## The Wachau

The [Wachau valley](https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wachau) is a UNESCO cultural landscape of vineyards, abbeys and castles, a short distance along the river. It is best seen from the water or on a guided walk.

## Melk Abbey

[Melk Abbey](https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Melk) , a baroque Benedictine abbey on a rock above the river, is a short trip. Allow about two hours for the abbey and the gardens.

## Food & shopping

Austrian food includes Wiener schnitzel, Marillenknödel (apricot dumplings) and local Grüner Veltliner wine. Wine taverns, called Heurigen, are a local tradition.
