Getting ashore
Ships call at Kingscote on Kangaroo Island, and passengers come ashore by tender or by the jetty. Check your ship’s notice for the landing point.
Watch-outs
The island is remote and has few services. Roads are long and some are unsealed. Carry water and sun cover, and watch for wildlife on the roads at dusk.
Kingscote
Kingscote is the island’s main town, with cafés, shops and the historic settlement. It is a quiet, relaxed place.
Wildlife
Kangaroo Island is known for koalas, sea lions, kangaroos and penguins. The Seal Bay Conservation Park has sea lion tours, and Flinders Chase National Park has wildlife and the Remarkable Rocks.
Vineyards and food
The island has wineries and local produce, including honey and cheese. Cellar doors are open to visitors.
Food & shopping
Local food includes fresh seafood, honey and cheese. Restaurants in Kingscote and the wineries are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Australian dollar. Cards are accepted in most places, but cash helps in remote areas. Mobile signal is limited outside the towns.
Accessibility & mobility
The jetty and Kingscote are mostly flat. Seal Bay and Flinders Chase involve boardwalks and steps. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
