## Getting ashore

All ships berth at Macquarie Wharf No. 2, which has a renovated cruise terminal. The terminal has seating, visitor information, local crafts, currency exchange and a duty-free shop. The city centre is within about ten minutes' walk.

## Watch-outs

Hobart's weather changes quickly, even in summer. Bring a waterproof and warm layers. Sunday trading is limited, so check which shops are open before you plan a shopping stop. The Mount Wellington road is steep and can close in bad weather.

## Salamanca and the waterfront

[Salamanca Place](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Salamanca+Place+Hobart) is a row of sandstone warehouses now full of galleries, cafés and shops. The Saturday market is the big event. The waterfront runs along the Derwent River, with the historic Hobart Town buildings and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery nearby.

## Mount Wellington

[Mount Wellington (kunanyi)](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Mount+Wellington+kunanyi+Hobart) rises above the city and gives wide views over the river and the harbour. The road is steep and winding, so a tour or taxi is easier. Check the weather and the road status before you go.

## Day trips

Port Arthur, the historic penal site on the Tasman Peninsula, is the most visited day trip. It is about an hour's drive, and a tour is the simplest option. The Bruny Island ferry and the Tasmanian wine regions are other popular choices.

## Food & shopping

Tasmania is known for seafood, cheese, wine and fruit. Salamanca and the Saturday market are the best places to buy local produce. Restaurants on the waterfront are busy at lunch.

## Money & connectivity

The currency is the Australian dollar. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are in the centre.

## Accessibility & mobility

The terminal and the waterfront are flat. Salamanca's cobbled areas are harder for wheelchairs. Mount Wellington and the Port Arthur site involve slopes and uneven paths, so ask the tour operator about step access and vehicles with a lift.
