Getting ashore at Pinkenba
Most large cruise ships use Brisbane International Cruise Terminal at 1 Cruise Terminal Drive, Pinkenba, near the river mouth. This is separate from Portside Wharf at Hamilton and the multi-user cargo facilities mentioned in older guides. Confirm your terminal before booking a driver. The port authority puts the city centre about 21 km or 30 minutes away by road in ordinary traffic. There is currently no public transport serving the cruise terminal. A city ferry is useful after reaching an urban wharf, but it cannot collect you from the ship.
Plan both transfers first
Use a ship shuttle if offered, a booked transfer, taxi or rideshare. Ask where the shuttle drops and collects, its final return and whether accessible spaces are available. The official port map marks taxi and rideshare zones, roughly 120 m from the building via a covered walkway. For rideshare, the port asks passengers to wait until they have exited and are ready before requesting a car. Check the full quoted fare before accepting; no fixed city fare is promised. Give the driver the International Cruise Terminal address for the return.
A simple city day
South Bank combines river paths, gardens, cafés and the Cultural Precinct. It makes an easy base for a three- or four-hour visit after your road transfer. The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art provide indoor relief from heat or rain; QAGOMA confirms general entry is free, with some exhibitions and events requiring paid or booked tickets. Across the river, the city centre adds Queen Street Mall and the City Botanic Gardens. Choose one compact walking loop rather than adding distant suburbs.
See the river cheaply
A CityCat journey offers a different view of the river bends and skyline once you are in town. Translink currently charges a flat A$0.50 for ordinary network journeys; special Airtrain pricing is excluded from this offer. Check your wharf, route, payment method and return service using the journey planner. An ordinary ferry ticket is transport, not a narrated sightseeing cruise. Take a short out-and-back section if time is tight, and avoid letting an enjoyable river ride erode the road-transfer margin back to Pinkenba.
Wildlife, food and practical tips
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is a separate outing at Fig Tree Pocket. Book through the sanctuary and plan transport around your call length; it no longer offers koala holding, despite older port guides. A Gold Coast beach day adds substantial road travel and is best treated as the main excursion. In town, choose a café or riverfront lunch and carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Prices are in Australian dollars. Protect against sudden rain as well as strong sunshine and confirm all-aboard time before your final city stop.
Accessibility & mobility
The terminal provides accessible pickup bays, but discuss the actual gangway gradient and walking distance with the ship. Reserve a wheelchair-capable vehicle rather than assuming the first taxi can take your equipment. South Bank provides relatively level paths, with some longer exposed stretches. Confirm ferry-wharf access and current service conditions through Translink, and select museum routes and rest stops that suit your group.
