## Getting ashore

Ships dock at Heritage Quay, a short walk from the centre of St John's. The quay has shops, a craft market and taxi stands. Some larger ships berth elsewhere, so check your ship's notice for the terminal and the walk to the gate.

## Watch-outs

Antigua is a small island, but the roads are narrow and busy, and traffic can slow a short trip. Taxi fares are set by the government, so check the official rate for your trip before you get in. Many beaches have little shade, so bring sun cover and water.

## St John's

The capital is compact and easy to walk. The [Museum of Antigua and Barbuda](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Museum+of+Antigua+and+Barbuda) covers the island's history. Redcliffe Quay and St John's Cathedral are close by, and the market is good for local produce and crafts.

## Nelson's Dockyard

[Nelson's Dockyard](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Nelson%27s+Dockyard+English+Harbour+Antigua) in English Harbour is the best-known sight on the island. It was Nelson's base in the 1780s and is now a national park with restored naval buildings. Allow at least two hours, and go early to avoid the heat. A taxi from town takes about 30 minutes.

## Shirley Heights

[Shirley Heights](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Shirley+Heights+Antigua) is a lookout above English Harbour, with views across the bays. A weekly party runs on Sunday evenings in season, with food, music and sunset views. Taxis can take you there and wait, but check the return arrangements before you go.

## Beaches

Dickenson Bay is the nearest beach to town and has calm water. Half Moon Bay and Turner's Beach on the south-east coast are quieter. Taxis can be arranged for a half-day trip with a return time agreed in advance.

## Food & shopping

Antigua has a good range of Caribbean food, from local dishes such as fungi and fish to restaurants on the beaches and at the harbour. Shops in town open during the day, and many close early on Sunday.

## Accessibility & mobility

Heritage Quay is flat and step-free, and taxis wait at the quay. Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights involve uneven paths and steps, and the heat can be strong. Beaches vary, so check access before booking a taxi. Ask your tour operator for an air-conditioned vehicle with step access.
